About the author
I’m Peter Gill, a Dutch-Indonesian born in the Netherlands, passionate about bridging cultures through understanding. In my early twenties, I started learning Mandarin with a clear goal: to build a career in mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. That journey took me to Taipei and Beijing to study the language, and later to live and work in Shanghai and Taipei, with frequent trips to Singapore for cross-cultural projects in mining and offshore wind.

Along the way, I developed a deep appreciation for Chinese-speaking societies and the importance of connecting West and East. These experiences inspired me to share insights in a way that goes beyond headlines and stereotypes.
Why I write
I founded Peter’s Perspective, my independent publishing platform, to provide fact-driven, context-rich perspectives on Mandarin-speaking societies, leadership, technology, and sustainability. Through my debut book, West meets East, I aim to help readers:
- Understand more about the societies in mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore.
- Explore the unique characteristics of mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore.
- Discover ways West and East can learn from each other to tackle global challenges.
My goal is simple. To help you navigate cultures, economies, and technologies with clarity, confidence, and curiosity.

Beyond writing
Growing up between the Netherlands, Jamaica, the Netherlands Antilles, and my European-Indonesian heritage shaped my curiosity for different cultures and perspectives. It sparked a broader interest in how societies make long-term choices and how those choices shape everyday life. One of the clearest examples is energy. I currently work at Eneco on energy storage solutions, with a focus on the energy transition and sustainability. Outside of work, I enjoy running and spending time with friends and family.
